The Indiana University Foundation is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking finance leader to elevate our financial operations and strengthen the systems that support our mission. The Director of Financial Operations and Reporting will play a critical role in enhancing the accuracy, transparency, and timeliness of financial information across both the Foundation and the IU Alumni Association. This is an opportunity to bring fresh energy to our financial reporting, deepen organizational understanding of budgeting, and support leaders in making data-driven decisions.

As the steward of our financial systems and processes, the director will lead monthly and annual close activities, manage audits, ensure strong internal controls, and oversee financial compliance. A key focus of this role is strengthening financial reporting practices and helping stakeholders see—and act on—the story behind the numbers. The ideal candidate will bring the curiosity and discipline to elevate our reporting framework, while also introducing new tools and technologies that streamline workflows and increase accuracy across the finance function.

This leader will also shape how the broader organization engages with and understands its financial resources. By partnering closely with budget managers and department leaders, the director will guide the annual budget process, support forecasting, and build the financial acumen needed for responsible, strategic decision-making. The director will play a visible, consultative role—helping teams see budgeting not just as an operational requirement, but as a vital element of planning, stewardship, and mission alignment.

Beyond technical expertise, and just as importantly, we are seeking someone who is excited about developing people and cultivating a positive, collaborative team culture. The director will mentor staff, encourage growth, and foster a sense of shared purpose within the finance team. This role is ideal for someone who not only excels in financial leadership, but also finds energy in lifting others, strengthening cross-functional partnerships, and creating an environment where the finance team can thrive and do its best work in service of higher education.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business (Master’s or CPA preferred).
  • Seven years of progressive financial management experience required; ten years of experience preferred - ideally in nonprofit, higher education, or foundation settings.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and fund accounting.
  • Experience with audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
  • Proficiency in financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
